AI engineers take models — whether trained in-house or accessed through an API — and turn them into features that actually work in production: reliable, fast, and safe enough to put in front of real users. That means wiring up retrieval systems, fine-tuning models for specific tasks, and building the guardrails that keep an AI feature from confidently saying something wrong.

A day in the life

The day might start reviewing how a deployed model performed against real user queries overnight, then adjusting a prompt or fine-tuning pipeline to fix an issue. Late morning often includes integrating a new model version into the product and testing edge cases where it might fail. The afternoon could involve a discussion with the product team about what an AI feature should and shouldn't attempt, and the day often ends running evaluation benchmarks before a deploy.
